Gabie does a great job of explaining and illustrating periodontal disease. She explains that this is a disease of the mouth, and it can cause issues with infection and damage to the periodontal ligament – hence the name of the disease. The periodontal ligament is a vital joint in the mouth, as it keeps all of the teeth in their correct positions. This joint is found between the roots of the tooth and the alveolar bone socket, and it can withstand pressure because it is a fibrous joint. Periodontal disease begins as gingivitis, which is a disease that can happen when the space between the gumline and the tooth gets filled with bacteria. This is called gingivitis. If gingivitis is not reversed by good tooth hygiene, it can develop into periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is unlike gingivitis in that the damage to the teeth and gums cannot be undone, as the bacteria has reached the periodontal ligament and is getting deeper and deeper into the gums. The alveolar bones also begin to break down as well, and more of the tooth is visible because the bones and gums are receding away from the tooth, which makes the tooth look longer than normal.
Gabie shows us how the process works in her beautiful paintings. The first painting shows what healthy teeth and gums look like, and the next two show us the gradual degradation of the bone and gums around the tooth. She tells us that the excess space that occurs when the gum and bone recedes lets even more bacteria thrive. She tells us that if periodontal disease is allowed to progress and become severe, bone and gum loss can occur which can lead to teeth falling out. All in all, Gabie did an amazing job showing us what periodontal disease is and its process.
