My project is on the regions of the large intestine and how food travels through it. First, food enters the large intestine through the cecum. It then travels through the ascending colon, transcending colon, descending colon, and sigmoid colon where water and electrolytes are absorbed from the food. The food then becomes stool as it is dried out. The stool stays in the rectum until there is enough stool to stretch the rectal walls, which will then signal that a bowel movement is needed to excrete the waste. Once the signal is sent, the stool is moved into the anal canal where it will then be eliminated from the body out of the anal sphincter.

  1. Hunter Taylor’s project depicts the large intestinal tract through a bakery lens. The appendix is depicted by a blue line of frosting coming off of the cecum (also blue frosting). The ascending colon is depicted by a lavender purple frosting, while the transverse colon is depicted by light green frosting. At the junctions between different lengths of colon (like between the ascending and transverse) the colors are half and half. The descending colon is depicted by pink frosting, and the sigmoid colon and rectum have yellow frosting. Most of the frosting has a firmer build, while the yellow frosting is more round to symbolize stool. The stool stays in the rectum until there is enough to stretch the rectum’s walls. Once there is enough, it is signaled to be excreted through the anal canal and the anus.
