Katie’s project is on the different stages of mitosis, more so on how they differ between the regular progression of stages vs the irregular progression of the stages in a person with downs syndrome and or trisomy 21. With trisomy 21 there is an extra X chromosome that appears during the anaphase stage of mitosis. Mitosis consists of four different stages prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase and one transition phase prometaphase which happens between the prophase and metaphase stages. In regular progression the four stages and transition phase do their jobs flawlessly. When it comes to the defect of down syndrome, the extra chromosome appears during formation of either the eggs of sperm. This defect usually occurs when the last two stages of mitosis when the cells are dividing the extra X shows up.
