In this STEAM project, I chose to draw nerves, one being normal, and the other affected by multiple sclerosis. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease that attacks the myelin sheath of neurons, particularly of the central nervous system (CNS). MS can disrupt communication between the CNS and the body. Causes are unknown. Effects can range depending on part of the CNS affected. There is no cure for MS but a person with MS can use medicine such as therapeutic agents to relieve symptoms.

This STEAM project aims to explain and showcase the degeneration of a neuron’s composition as a result of multiple sclerosis through a drawn art medium. The artwork drawn by Bernard shows the stark difference visible in a healthy neuron, unaffected by multiple sclerosis (MS), and an unhealthy, deformed neuron that has been affected by MS. As is indicated by Bernard’s artistic representation as well as his written explanation, multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that attacks and damages the myelin sheath of a neuron, impacting their ability to function and protect the axon properly, resulting in difficult communication between neurons, most oftenly neurons of the central nervous system. Symptoms fall on a spectrum depending on the severity and location of neuron damage that is affecting each individual with multiple sclerosis. Though there is no established cure for MS, someone who is affected with multiple sclerosis may take a combination of therapeutic drugs that may lessen symptoms in severity and progression. With research accompanied by an accurate and visually appealing drawing, Bernard Pete is able to provide an engaging and informative piece on multiple sclerosis and its effects on the nervous system.
