In this project I covered the objective of describing the four major types of tissues, which are epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissue. I made the connection of how Ehlers- Danlos Syndrome affects these types of tissues and went into the why and how. My artwork depicts the effects of the collagen issues that come with this disease, including the dislocation of joints, in this case the kneecap, due to weakened connective tissues.
Trinity’s STEAM project is covering Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, connecting to the course objective; Describing the four major types of tissues, which are epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissue.” Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is a genetic condition that affects the body’s connective tissue. This condition causes the body to have weak connective tissue because the body is not able to make collagen properly. Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome also can affect the skin, bones, muscles, blood vessels, organs, and the nervous system. Some patients will experience loose joints, high narrow palate, flat feet, stretchy skin, and muscle and joint weakness and pain. Trinity goes on to discuss the discuss the four major types of tissues; epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissue. Epithelial tissue covers the body’s surfaces and is characterized as being supported by connective tissues. Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome affects epithelial tissue by weakening the connective tissue making the skin stretcher. Connective tissue is considered connective tissue proper, cartilage, bone, and blood. It binds, supports, protects, insulates, storages, and transport substances. Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome affects the person’s collagen by weakening the connective tissue, cartilage, bones, and blood vessel walls, which leads to joint problems and easily bruises the blood vessels. Muscle tissue is responsible for most of the movement in the body. Ehlers- Danlos Syndrome causes the muscle to weaken, feel pain, and cramp. The nervous tissue is the brain, spinal cord, and nerves and controls the entire body and regulates bodily functions. Ehlers- Danlos Syndrome causes neurological issues. Trinity’s art project is a diagram of a normal knee with the patella in the middle of the knee properly connected to the quadriceps femoris tendon and the patella ligament, and a knee joint with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome showing the patella sliding to one side of the knee because of the ligaments loosening.
