This project is one of the most creative ones I have read! The comparison between tissues and objects around the house in everyday life is really interesting. I like the fact that it does serve as a learning method as Nathan mentioned. These tissues can be easily memorized and learned through this creative method. The objective Nathan Hoop achieved was “compare and contrast the function and structural characteristics of tissues.” The project goes through the various aspects of each tissue that was provided.
The simple squamous epithelial tissue was compared to a countertop which has a remarkably similar design. The dark spots in the countertop could represent the nuclei in the tissue. This comparison is great because simple squamous is found in the lining of the blood vessels and body cavities which is similar in the way that a countertop lines the outer part of the counter. Next, Nathan compares connective tissue to a wooden pantry door. The collagen fibers in connective tissue resemble the lines in the wood of the pantry door. The collagen fibers are compact and sturdy which is why they are in areas of the body that need the most strength. The next tissue mentioned is fibrocartilage tissue, and it is compared to the top of a skateboard. The lines/design of the skateboard is very similar to the structure of the tissue. Fibrocartilage tissue is strong and supportive like a skateboard in the way that it needs to be strong enough to hold a person’s weight. After that, blood is put in comparison to a grandfather clock. The pattern that blood gives is very alike in the design of the clock. Blood provides a healthy vascular system and strong tissues throughout the body. And finally, the last tissue mentioned is cardiac muscle. The cardiac muscle is compared to a flower vase. The cardiac muscle is found on the walls of the heart and contains many cells that work as impulses from the nervous system. Overall, this project was created to show how we can point out similarities from regular everyday objects and use it to help us learn material in classes. Through this project, we learned several aspects of tissues in a fun way.

Nathan chose to illustrate the various types of tissues including epithelium, connective, cartilage, blood and cardiac muscles and tissues. The main goal of the project was to show how these tissues look similar to everyday household objects. The art was intriguing because it made me realize how closely some tissues resemble household objects. One comparison was granite countertop and simple squamous epithelium tissue. They looked very similar. Simple squamous tissue are made out of small flattened cells and the cells create a layered look which resembles granite because the granite picture looked like layered clouds. Next, Nathan compared connective tissue to a pantry door which had woods grains that resembled the long, compacted fibers. Fibrocartilage was compared to a green skateboard. The skateboard has long green grains in it which resembles fibrocartilage which consists of dense and compacted fibers. Blood tissue was compared to a grandfather clock that had a unique pattern. Blood tissue contains lots of round cells. The grandfather clock had a pattern that was similar to the cells, but the pattern did not have the round edges like the blood tissue did. Last was a comparison of cardiac muscle and a flower vase. The flower vase has a pink, orange pattern that resembled cardiac muscle. The end included all of the household objects pictures from farther back which was cool to see since they look different than when zoomed in. This project made me realize that we can relate anatomy to everyday life in a fun and memorable way.
