By manipulating the physiology of your hands, Caitlin is able to reconstruct a simulated feeling that is common in medical patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease that is a result of immune system failure, and causes symmetric pain and extreme stiffness that is most severe after waking in the morning and fades throughout the day. To parallel the stiffness, Caitlin’s art project uses a technique where you can manipulate the joints in your fingers by curling them together and pulling for an few minutes. The effect is a strange sensation of stiffness when uncurling, something that people with RA experience daily. The efficacy of this experiment is planted in the fact that it is a personal experience that you create for yourself, and by doing it yourself you can be moved in a way that is more meaningful than if you just looked at a model or a picture. The objective that is covered is explaining the humoral adaptive response, and uses the example of RA to do that.
