The artwork is also very effective for showing how the disease impacts the lungs and creates an environment that can promote a bacterial laden lung. The sticky mucus causes the bacteria in the lung to not be expelled which will in turn cause infections. The project shows how Cystic Fibrosis is genetic and the patient will experience the side effects of the disease from conception. And, sadly, the disease and persistent infections can lead to the patient’s death. The digestive system will also be impacted but most of the affects are seen in the lungs.

This mutation will mostly have an impact on epithelial cells. The disease has an affect on the simple cuboidal epithelial tissue that lines the bronchioles and the alveoli in the lungs. Our lungs naturally produce mucus but it is thinner and helps to carry bacteria and debris out of the lungs. But mucus in the Cystic Fibrosis lung is very thick and sticky.
