My STEAM project is on Ankylosing spondylitis, also known as bamboo spine. This condition is an arthritic chronic inflammatory condition that can occur in many joints in the human body and the spine. Each section has its own color of gummy lifesavers (representing the vertebral disks) and its own number of mint lifesavers (representing the vertebrae). The spine composed in my project shows the cervical vertebrae (single mints with orange disks in between), thoracic vertebrae (two mints with red disks in between), and lumbar vertebrae (three mints with green disks in between) of the spine (there is also a sacrum and a coccyx at the bottom). The ankylosing spondylitis can be seen from the bottom of the L2 through the top of the L5 vertebrae. The bone overgrowth is represented by chewed gum that connects these vertebrae ‘together.’
