Achilles tendinitis is a common injury that occurs from the overuse of the Achilles tendon. There are three stages associated with Achilles tendinitis; Grades 1 – 3, ranging from simple swelling and tenderness, leading to weakening of the tendon, which can result in an eventual tear or rupture. When a rupture occurs the foot’s lever mechanism is no longer functional and as a result, the foot is not functional either. When this happens, surgery is typically the only course of action available. The surgery for this type of injury involves making an incision and having the tendon stitched back together. If the damage is severe enough, there could be a need to reconstruct the tendon using a tendon from another area within the foot.
