Meningitis comes in multiple types, but the most serious is bacterial meningitis. If not treated soon, bacterial meningitis can cause damage to the brain and spinal cord. Meningitis can affect different age groups, but the most susceptible group is newborns. Symptoms include stiff neck, headache, fever, nausea, photophobia, vomiting, and a confused mental state. Newborns may not experience the same symptoms, their symptoms may include a soft spot on their head, irritability, lethargy, and abnormal reflexes. Bacterial meningitis can be treated with IV antibiotics, treatment can take one to two weeks depending on how advanced the infection is. Bacterial meningitis can be seen on neuro scans since it can cause brain swelling and damage. Since the illness affects the brain and nervous system it also affects the rest of the body since the nervous system is important to bodily functions and the immune system.
