A hernia occurs when an organ or fatty tissue squeezes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue, known as the fascia. Typically, it involves the stomach or intestine. A hernia can be caused by picking up heavy objects, overusing the same muscle, straining during coughing, sneezing, diarrhea or constipation, being overweight or having poor nutrition, or using tobacco. There are five different types of hernias, and unfortunately, they do not go away on their own. They can be treated with open surgery, laparoscopic surgery, or robotic hernia repair. For his STEAM project, Dante created a poster that shows where hernias are located, and what they look like from the outside, and internally.
