Olivia’s STEAM project explores Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and how it impacts the digestive system, specifically focusing on how this condition interrupts the normal path of food during digestion. GERD is often characterized by chronic acid reflux which can lead to heartburn, food regurgitation, chest pain, and difficulty swallowing. Olivia’s work highlights the role of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and its prevention of letting acid entering the esophagus. A weakened or relaxed LES can allow acid reflux to occur frequently and disrupt the digestive process. Olivia’s wonderful artistic skills demonstrates this wonderfully! Olivia’s STEAM project also connects to the course objective of the digestive system with a focus of the esophagus and stomach. Various lifestyle changes and treatments, such as weight loss, elevating the head during sleep and antacids or other mediations are often effective strategies for managing GERD. The research shows how GERD not only affects the digestive system but the interconnection of bodily functions and how even as something simple like a malfunctioning sphincter can cause significant health concerns. I enjoyed reading her STEAM project and learned something new!
