  1. My partner’s STEAM project is on multiple sclerosis with a very endearing comic about a mother with this autoimmune disease. The comic shows multiple sclerosis as a cartoon and how this mother can combat living with it. Multiple sclerosis is a condition that attacks the nervous system tissues in the brain and spinal cord, leading to early symptoms of limb numbness, body fatigue, vision loss, vertigo, and cognitive impairment. There is no cure for MS, but there are treatment options. Some ways of diagnosing this condition are by getting MRIs of the brain and spinal cord for lesions or conducting a spinal tap to investigate cerebrospinal fluid to see the number of white blood cells, oligoclonal bands, and traces of neurofilaments. However, before a physician may make a diagnosis, they must rule out that the patient’s condition is not another degenerative disease. Those who are diagnosed with MS have treatment options to help slow the progression of the disease or aid in relapse symptoms. First and foremost, it is best for the patient to be referred to a neurologist to assess their condition and create a care plan to help minimize the progression. Then those who are wanting to minimize the speed of progression can be treated with oral drugs or injected drugs or drug infusions.
