Rusty Baker’s project is displaying the four stages of bone healing with play doh. In stage one, after the fracture, the blood vessels start to hemorrhage. This causes a mass formation of clotted blood which forms a hematoma. This is shown with the red play doh surrounding the fractured bone. Stage two, is where the capillaries grow into the hematoma. The fibroblasts, cartilage, and osteogenic cells start to reconstruct the bone; osteoblasts form spongy bone, and there is a creation of a cartilage matrix of repair tissue. This is called fibrocartilaginous callus. The blue play doh is the external and internal callus, and the red play doh is the blood vessels in the bone. The third stage is where bony callus is formed. The fibrocartilaginous callus is converted into bony callus of spongy bone, which is depicted to be the orange play doh on the project. Finally is stage four. In stage four, bone remodeling occurs. The overabundance of material on the exterior of the bone, and within the medullary cavity is removed. Compact bone; hard outside layer of bone, is laid down to reconstruct shaft walls. After all these steps, the final structure of the bone should resemble the original bone, and the bone can withstand the same mechanical stressors as the bone did before the fracture.
