Jacob Hilton did their project on ALS and the effects it has on the nervous system and the muscles. The objectives covered in the project are the four basic functions and characteristics of muscle tissue as well as the identification of the key structures in the nervous system within the lens of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that affects motor neurons. It affects voluntary muscle movement and breathing since the axons become unable to carry signals to the muscles to carry out functions. The four basic functions are movement, stability, heat protection, and posture. As ALS progresses, the muscles are no longer able to carry out these functions as they begin to atrophy and twitch. Additionally, the central nervous system (CNS) is not able to properly send signals to carry out functions as the motor neurons degenerate. The effects of ALS on the functions of the nervous system in addition to the muscles are discussed further. The visual component of the project is an axon affected with ALS modeled out of paper mache. The structures of the axon are modeled and labeled. The nucleus, dendrites, cell body, axon, myelin sheath, and axon terminal are all clearly visible. The affected muscle is also included in the paper mache model.
