For my STEAM project, I completed a painting of the vertebral column with scoliosis. I wanted to explore how hormone regulation and bone development correlate with a person who also has scoliosis. Specifically, my objective is from Unit 4, explain how bone development is hormonally regulated. My painting reflects the development of an adult with scoliosis and the physical effects on the spine. It contains both aspects of realism and abstract concepts. The distinct curvatures can be in a “s” or “c” shape and range from mild, moderate or severe. I used trees at the top of my painting to correlate bone development and the importance of growth spurts during adolescence, as this is the timeframe where most bone development begins to finalize. I used salt to texture the background of the painting to represent hormones being dispersed throughout the body while also acting as the sky in the painting.
