  1. Alyssa’s STEAM project demonstrates the pathway of blood throughout the heart. Beginning flow is the vena cava, although there is two of them, the inferior vena cava is the venous trunk that allows deoxygenated blood to the right atrium of the heart. The tricuspid valve is one of the two main valves on the right side of the heart, allowing flow of blood from right atrium to right ventricle. Next, the pulmonary valve closes off the lower right chamber and when opened, allows blood to be pumped from the heart to the lungs where it is oxygenated. The left atrium acts as a holding chamber for oxygenated blood returning from the lungs, where it is pumped to other areas of the heart. Following the left atrium, the mitral valve can be found between there and the left ventricle, allowing no back flow of blood. The semilunar valves share the same responsibility of preventing the flow of blood back into the heart. Lastly, the aortic arch is sturdy and thick, it distributes blood from the left ventricle to the rest of the body through three major arteries. Alyssa did a great job of describing this flow in a creative way and the lyrics explained every function perfectly, I feel as if I have a better understanding of blood flow across the heart and will always remember this song!
