My project is on Osteogenesis Imperfecta. A disease that originated in utero. It affects collagen levels in the body resulting in fragile bones that break easily, form incorrectly, bones to grow bowed and result in a smaller bone matrix than healthy bones. OI is an inherited disease that has no cure. OI is broken into types. Some resulting in death shortly after birth. Fetuses can break bones while in utero and will continue to easily break bones throughout their life. OI can also result in bone growth being stunted. Resulting in shorter stature once the child reaches adulthood.
Osteogenesis Imperfecta is a rare disorder that can also be known as brittle bone disease or glass bone disease. Which is why I chose to do a “glass skeleton”. My glass skeleton is full of imperfections to highlight the translation from Latin “imperfect bone formation”.When looking at XRays of people affected by this disease the whiteness we would normally see is mostly absent.
