This project explores the difference in normal lungs compared to lungs that have emphysema. Using breakfast cereal to represent lung tissue at 150x we can see how lungs that are affected by emphysema have broken down their interstitial layers and have large air pockets lined with carbon deposits. We can also see the enlarged alveoli and the increased mucus. All these factors combined lead to reduced gas exchange and poor oxygenation of the affected individual. A typical person with emphysema has to work 15% harder then a non-affected individual to breath. The damage caused by emphysema is irreversible and treatment is simply symptom based and trying to prevent further damage.
