In my STEAM-Project, I wanted to cover variant Creutzfeldt Jakob disease and what kind of antibody treatment they have studied against the disease. VCJD is disease caused by prion. Prion is misfolded infectious protein and it causes neurogenerative diseases. VCJD is one of the prion diseases. In the art piece I’ll show where vCJD has come, and littlebit of its effect to human. So the variant Creutzfeldt Jakob disease has come to human from cows, which were BSE (bovine spongiform enephalopathy) infected. Prions spread to human, if human has consumed meat or bone or any material from the cow that have had BSE-infection. From the piece you can see few different symptoms of vCJD, such as impaired coordination. You can also see, that person eyes are different color. That represents hallucinations. In the piece you can see that in the head of human is balls of different color. White balls represent infective prions, and the blue balls represent antibodies that are fighting against the prions.

Antibodies in the brain are fighting off prions but this disease is always fatal. This disease is also called mad cow disease. It affects the human by hindering control of the body. Coordination is impaired as well as other higher brain functions. Also represented in Katri’s artwork is that hallucinations are present. From the artwork is clear that we receive the disease from a cow and that it impairs our day to day functions.
