In Jewelia’s STEAM project, she went over the stages of Decomposition in water. Which by the way, is such a GOOD topic. My first thought was, “Wow that’s a really good topic”. She mentions how decomposition in water is very similar to above water, which I think is very interesting. As someone who works and sometimes will see bodies of people that have passed, the start of decomposition starts INCREDIBLY fast. Especially the first stage that she mentions. Autolysis, which is the destruction of cells after death. When the skin becomes discolored and cold. When a person passes above land you can begin to see this stage VERY quickly. With the remaining three stages being Putrefaction, the breaking down of flesh, bloating, when gases begin to fill inside the body, and advanced decay. I thought the bloating was super interesting because, I remember seeing a clip of a beached whale, that had actually exploded after being touched because of all the gas trapped inside him. Her art piece does an excellent job at showing each individual stage. The detail and separation is perfect and tells you exactly what stage something could be at! Super well done!
