  1. Every 2 out of 5 women develop anemia during pregnancy. Anemia is an insufficient supply of red blood cells, resulting in less oxygen delivery to the tissues and baby. There are two common types of anemia in pregnancy: iron deficiency and folate deficiency. Folate is a vitamin that supports red blood cell production, and when folate is low so it red blood cells. Women with anemia will experience pale skin, lips and nails; feel tired or weak; dizziness; shortness of breath; rapid heartbeat; trouble concentrating. Anemia can be detected by measuring hemoglobin and hematocrit blood tests. Anemia can be treated with supplements, and/or diet.
