If you can’t tell that is the female reproductive system. I used different colors to distinguish between the myometrium and the uterus. The beige section inside the uterus is representative of the increased mucous that is built up by a hormonal IUD. The beads are representative of the copper ions that are released by the copper IUD. The IUD in the uterus is modeled after a hormonal IUD as you may be able to guess since it isn’t copper.
This project is a beautiful fabric representation of an IUD and how it interacts with the female reproductive system. This connects with the learning objective about how hormones control ovulation. There are two types of IUDs, hormonal and copper. Hormonal IUDs work by releasing progestin to mimic progesterone which prevents sperm from reaching eggs and fertilizing them. The progestin causes thick mucus in the uterine lining and keeps sperm stuck and unable to enter the cervix. The copper IUD that is shown in this project portrays the copper ions that the copper IUD releases. The copper ions work a little differently from hormones because they are toxic to both sperm and eggs which prevents pregnancy. This art representation shows both the thick mucus lining as well as copper ions in the uterus.
