Barrett’s Esophagus is a condition in which the esophagus becomes damaged by acid reflux, also known as heartburn. For my STEAM project, I have decided to sculpt two separate stomachs and esophagi out of clay. The green cotton balls represent the stomach acid, and I also included the texture of the stomach. On the left, it is clear that there is a working sphincter to control the amount of stomach acid that is brought up. The right side is a model of Barrett’s Esophagus in which the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) has failed and the stomach acid is easily brought up and causes damage to the esophagus.
