In my Bio 310 steam project, I wanted to further research the role the thyroid plays in different vertebrates. I started my project with further researching the role of the thyroid in different organisms, with the intention to solidify material covered within class. Once this was completed and I knew I was fully competent I went on to search for interesting conditions regarding the thyroid, something which occurs in humans along with other animals. I settled on thyroid goiters, which is characterized by intense swelling of the thyroid. This swelling leads to a number of different problems for individuals, ranging from difficulty swallowing to an increased metabolic rate. My media of choice was to create a clay model of a regularly sized thyroid and one which was swollen. I created a base for both which is to represent the general location of the thyroid in the human body, and to help demonstrate the intense size difference of a healthy and goiter type thyroid.
