  1. The two-dimensional line drawing of the alveoli and bronchi represents the differences between a normal lung and a lung in an asthmatic individual. Asthma is a disease that effects the function and structure of the respiratory system. When triggered, asthma causes inflammation, increased production of mucus and constriction of airways. Common triggers are typically environmental in nature, but research supports a connection to weather as a trigger as well. Asthma symptoms can lead to a potential life-threatening asthma attack causing coughing, shortness of breath, a tight chest and a wheezing sound while breathing. It is vital that one be prepared during an asthma attack. Steroid inhalers are a common treatment to reduce the symptoms of an asthma attack by helping to open the airways open.
