Water is a polar molecule that consists of one oxygen molecule and two hydrogen molecules. From this polar molecular structure water forms hydrogen bonds that play a part in all of water’s material properties. These properties include cohesion, surface tension, high specific heat, low density as a solid, and acting as a universal solvent.

  1. I really enjoyed reading this Ali May’s project, because although water seems to be a commonly known element, as it relates to material properties is less commonly known. As she summarized these properties included cohesion, surface tension, high specific heat, low density as a solid, and it even acts as a universal solvent. Water is essential to life on earth, and unlike other liquids when turned into a solid, is has less density than when it is a liquid. What I did not know is that if ice sank, eventually all ponds, lakes, and oceans would freeze solid and in turn would make life on Earth impossible. Lastly she notes, water acts as a universal solvent, it dissolves ions, salt, sugar, blood, sap of plants and even the liquid within all cells.
