  1. There are seven types of bone fractures including, greenstick or incomplete, transverse, where the break is straight across, spiral, which spirals around the bone, oblique which is diagonal, compression which is where the bone is crushed, comminuted where the bone is in at least three pieces, and segmental where the bone is fractured in multiple places and leaves a piece suspended in the body. Fractures may be open or closed depending on whether they break skin or not. In Sierra’s essay she delves into detail about the possible complications that arise in people who break bones but have preexisting health conditions such as diabetes and osteoporosis. Diabetes causes problems with the regeneration of bones which leads higher risk for fractures and poor healing conditions. In Sierra’s lovely illustration she connects the classic tale of humpty dumpty to the different types of fractures. In her illustration it begins with the fibula and tibia upon a wall and you will never guess it but they had a great fall. After the fall and the emergency medical technicians arrive and cannot decide the type of fracture Sierra calls on the audience for help. This allows the reader to further engage in the ideas Sierra’s project makes the audience think about. It’s the audience’s job to decide which type of fracture tibia fibula has suffered from. If one chooses the wrong type of fracture there is no punishment but let this be a learning experience in familiarizing one’s self with the different types of bone fractures and how they are classified.
